A 50-year-old cyclist died after a BMW vehicle, with a “VIP number plate”, rammed into his cycle at Southwest Delhi’s Mahipalpur flyover Sunday morning. Police have arrested the car driver.
The deceased, Subhendu Banerjee, was a businessman from Gurgaon and an avid cyclist. He was riding alone when the car hit him from the rear. Police said he had a helmet on and would cycle every day.
Visuals from the spot show the car sporting a Delhi Cantt Board sticker. However, police said the owner of the car is not a member of the board but a businessman from West Delhi.

DCP (Southwest) Manoj C said, “On enquiry, it was found that the car’s tyre had burst. The driver could not control the vehicle and hit a cyclist. He rushed the cyclist to a hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.”
A case was registered against the driver, Somveer (31), who has been booked under sections of rash driving and causing death by negligence. “The offending car has been seized and the driver arrested. The BMW’s owner has been identified as Sunil Chander (40), a resident of Punjabi Bagh who runs a mobile shop. Investigation is at a preliminary stage. Mechanical inspection will be done on the car,” said the DCP.
Police said Somveer had allegedly dropped his owner off and was returning to Punjabi Bagh when he hit the victim. “Sunil said he bought the car second-hand and retained the sticker. We will take necessary legal action and more sections will be added in the FIR after document verification. Sunil also denied his presence inside the car at the time of the accident. We are verifying it,” added the DCP.
