Wake up, grab your bicycle and pedal.

This is how road biking is usually thought of as. However, the reality is entirely different.

Though cycling does not require any rigorous planning, there are few essentials to keep in mind. After planning the route and timings, you need to pack the essentials for Road biking.

So, here are the top seven things to carry that are non-negotiable while Road biking.

Clothing

Padded shorts and tights are the norms. Grab your favorite pair with a cycling jersey. Your daily cotton tee will not be ideal for long rides.

Also, ensure that your jersey is of bright colour to enhance visibility and safety.

Grab another pair of comfortable clothes for food breaks or stays.

Gear

A helmet is a no-brainer while going for a bike ride. Cycling helmets have evolved rapidly, so know your options and pick the best. Helmets save lives, so do not try to be frugal on them.

Also, carry your sunscreens, glasses, and a first aid kit.

Water and snacks

Bike riding is a tiring activity and is physically demanding. So, adequate water and nutrition intake are important. This does not mean you grab sugar candies and a bottle of coke for the ride.

Buy a quality cycling water bottle and fill it up. Additionally, carry a protein bar or a couple of bananas or energy chews and gels. These provide you the carbohydrates and sugar required for energy production.

Pumps or CO2 cartridges

A flat tire or a puncture is the last thing you need while road biking. Yet, given the uncertainties, carrying a pump or CO2 cartridges is highly advisable.

They are reliable ways of inflating the tires and are inexpensive. Some pumps can be fitted to the frame and we recommend them highly.

Tire levers and spare tubes

Tire levers are a godsend when you have a flat tire. They help you remove and install the tires easily. Also, you save the effort of pinching the tube using a tire lever.

Carrying a spare tube is basic knowledge. For ‘that person’ who fails to carry one, you can assist by carrying an extra tube.

So, your saddle bag will carry tire levers and a couple of spare tubes.

Cycling multitool

Simple bolts and nuts can wreak havoc if they are not repaired properly. And for cycles, improper bolts and nuts are recipes for disaster. For such unpredictable situations, a cycling multitool is a lifesaver.

The multitool’s versatility can fix most of the issues in your cycle. Easily, they may be the difference between you pedaling or pushing the cycle for the rest of the journey.

Bicycle lock

A simple bicycle lock is often neglected by cyclists. While pausing for food breaks or to halt, a bicycle lock shall ensure the security of the cycle.

Though it is not a complete saver, it can be the reason why the thief neglects your cycle, given the efforts needed to break a lock.

Spoke Herd advises you to carry these 7 things to make your road biking a smooth riding.

Don’t be ‘that person’ who bugs others for a spare tire or a patch. Be self-sufficient and have a great journey.
